START: MACHAME GATE (1828m, 5400ft)
FINISH: MACHAME CAMP (3020m, 9400ft)
ALTITUDE GAIN: 1192m 4000ft
DISTANCE: 10.8km
WALKING TIME: 6-7 hrs.
VEGETATON: Montane Forest
After registering at the gate office, you start your ascent and enter the rain forest almost immediately. There is a strong possibility of rain in the forest, which will transform the trail into a very muddy and slippery experience. You will have a lunch stop about halfway and will reach the Machame Camp (3020m) in the late afternoon.
Overnight Machame Camp (Lunch, Dinner)
START: MACHAME CAMP (3020m, 9400ft)
FINISH: SHIRA CAMP (3847m, 12500ft)
ALTITUDE GAIN: 847m 3100ft
DISTANCE: 5.2km
WALKING TIME: 4-6 hrs.
VEGETATON: moorland
You rise early at Machame Camp and after breakfast you climb an hour or so to the top of the forest and then for 2 hours at a gentler gradient through the moorland zone. After a short lunch and rest, you continue up a rocky ridge onto the Shira plateau. By now you will be able to see in
an easterly direction, the Western Breach with its stunning glaciers. You are now due west of Kibo and after a short hike you will reach the Shira campsite at 3 847m.
Overnight Shira Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
START: SHIRA CAMP (3847m, 12500ft) LAVA TOWER (4642m, 16000ft)
FINISH: BARRANCO (3984m, 13000ft)
ALTITUDE GAIN: 795m 3500ft
ALTITUDE LOSS: 658m, 3000ft
DISTANCE: 10.7km
WALKING TIME: 6-7 hrs.
VEGETATON: Semi-desert
After breakfast we will head toward Lava Tower through a semi desert and desert and rocky landscape surrounding Lava Tower, where we will reach an altitude of 4642m after about a 5 hour trek. Lunch is served at a designated area. This is definitely the toughest day so far. It is normally around this point, where some climbers may start experiencing symptoms of breathlessness, irritability and headaches from the altitude. After lunch you will descend again by almost 658m to the Barranco camping area. The 658m descend from Lava Tower to Barranco camp creates a true acclimatization benefit. The descent will take approximately two hours.
Overnight Barranco Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
START: BARRANCO CAMP (3984m, 13000ft)
FINISH: KARANGA CAMP (4100m, 13100ft)
ALTITUDE GAIN (ft): 116m, 1000ft
DISTANCE: 5km
WALKING TIME: 4-5 hrs.
VEGETATON: Alpine Desert
After spending a night at the great Barranco Wall (a very imposing sight at first), you make your way up this awesome looking obstacle, which in the end usually turns out to be easier than anticipated. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you will see the beauty of the Mountain. The route then heads down through the Karanga Valley over intervening ridges and valleys, and then joins up with the Mweka route. This is the preferred route down from the summit.
Overnight Karanga Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
START: KARANGA CAMP (4100m, 13100ft)
FINISH: BARAFU CAMP (4600m, 15,300ft)
ALTITUDE GAIN: 500m, 2200 ft
DISTANCE: 4km
WALKING TIME: 3-4hrs
VEGETATON: Alpine Desert
A short but steep climb out of Karanga, and an easy path on compacted scree with wide views, we then climb steadily to reach the Barafu Campsite (4,600 m). The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent. Early to bed this evening. This is crucial for acclimatization for the summit attempt the next day.
Overnight Barafu Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
START: BARAFU CAMP (4600m, 15300ft), SUMMIT (5895m, 19,345ft)

ALTITUDE LOSS: 2805m, 9345ft
DISTANCE: Ascent 4.5km, Descent 10.8 km
WALKING TIME: Ascent 7-8 hrs., Descent 6-8 hrs.
VEGETATON: Stone scree and ice-capped summit
Very early in the morning (midnight to 12:30am), we commence to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. We will head in a northwesterly direction and our ascent will be through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging section of the trek.
At Stella Point (18,600 ft), you will stop for a short rest and will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting). From Stella Point, you may encounter snow all the way on your 1-hour ascent to the summit. At Uhuru Peak, you have reached the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Faster hikers will see the sunrise from the summit.
Enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life!
The walk back to Barafu from the summit, takes about 3 hours. Here you will have a well-earned but short rest and collect the rest of your gear, before heading down to Mweka Hut (3090m). The route is not difficult and will take you down the rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest. The camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Dinner and washing water will be prepared.
Overnight Mweka Hut (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)
START: MWEKA CAMP (3090m, 10000ft)
FINISH: MWEKA GATE (1641m, 5400ft)
ALTITUDE LOSS: 1449m, 4600ft
DISTANCE: Approximately 8.5 km
WALKING TIME: 4-6 hrs.
VEGETATON: Forest
At Mweka Gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Stella Point (5739m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.
From the Mweka Gate you will continue down into the Mweka Village, normally a muddy 3 km (1 hour) hike. You will then drive back to Arusha for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations.
